Quicksilver Tutorial

Quicksilver is an application to send messages through anonymous
remailers using Mixmaster encryption software (similar to PGP).
It is written by Richard Christman who also handles bug reports
and issues periodic updates of the software.  He can be reached
at alt.privacy.anon-server (maybe) or via his email addresses:
quicksilver@quicksilvermail.net
quicksilver@skuz.net

The software is located at:
http://quicksilver.skuz.net/
or
http://www.quicksilvermail.net/

To Install the software, select the main program file
QS1.2.6.exe (this is a beta version)
and run it.  The rest of the options can be installed
from the installation program.  The other option
is to save all of the installation subfiles on
your computer and then tell QS to use those files.

Examples of things you will or may want to install:

Mix29b39.zip  (Required)
QSpgp1.1.3.zip  (Required?)
QSpop1.2.0.zip  (Recommended if you may want to retrieve email)
QSnym1.0.1.zip  (Recommended if you may want to use nyms)
QSnews1.1.1.zip  (Recommended if you may want to use nyms)

During the installation, you are allowed to pick your directory.
I recommend placing it on an encrypted drive.

You are also given the option of using copies of your keys or
the original PGP keyring.  I recommend using copies.  QS will
sort them into private keys and remailer keys and keeps them
that way.  YOu can delete any remailer keys you might have on
the copy of your PGP Keyring for QS.

You will be prompted for information for your SMTP server for
sending email.  Enter your address (real if required by your
SMTP server) and the name of the server (like smtp.myisp.com).

Setup:
Not much left to do except:
1.  If your SMTP server requires SMTP authentication, then
use Tools/SMTP authentication and enter the required information.
2.  Go throught Tools/Options and see if you want to change
anything.  The defaults work pretty good.
3.  YOu may need to change the URLs for the keys and
remailer stats.  The ones that come with Quicksilver are
outdated.  Visit http://www.panta-rhei.eu.org for their
stats or ask in alt.privacy.anon-server for another source.

Sending a Message to a newsgroup.

Click on the envelope and letter icon on the left of the toolbar
("Templates").  Select Anonymous Reply.

The template looks like this:

Fcc: outbox
Host: smtp.myisp.com
From: myaddress <myaddress@myisp.com>
Chain: *,*
To:
Subject:

Change it to look like this:

Fcc: outbox
Host: smtp.myisp.com
From: myaddress <myaddress@myisp.com>
Chain: *,*,*
Newsgroups: alt.binaries.pictures.whatever
To: mail2news@dizum.com
Subject:

[Optionally you can remove the Fcc: outbox if you don't want to save
your messages.]

Notice that I added another "*" and a new line, Newsgroups as well
as entered the "To:" address.

Now, using the down arrow on the far left Icon on the toolbar, select
"Save As Template."  Give it a name like "HussyPost."  From now on,
when you click the templates button, you will see your new template.
You can make as many templates as you wish with different headers,
smtp servers, chain lengths, addresses, etc.

Using your new template

Enter a subject.  To enter the text in the message LEAVE ONE LINE BLANK
and then start writing.

<Example:>

Fcc: outbox
Host: smtp.myisp.com
From: myaddress <myaddress@myisp.com>
Chain: *,*,*
Newsgroups: alt.binaries.pictures.whatever
To: mail2news@dizum.com
Subject: This is the subject

This is the body of the message...
My signature
<End Example>

There are "cutmarks" at the bottom.  Any text printed below the cutmarks
is NOT sent, but simply stays with your message for YOU to read.  YOu
can put comments like (Don't use this for X group) or whatever.

When you are done typing, Press the send button.  If you encounter an
error about keys, then click the icon to the left of the update
button and press "Update."  Then, after completing this successfully,
press "send" on your message window again.

A new window will appear that shows you how it connects, what dialogue
is happening, and whether the message was successfully sent all three
times (three stars = three copies of the message).

A Few Hints

1.
To keep it from updating the stats and keys every goddamned time you
send a message, under Tools/Options/Remailers put in about
360 minutes for the first box.

2.
To keep from having to reenter your PGP Passwords for signing or
encrypting messages, Use Tools/Options/PGP and at the bottom
"Cache PGP passphrases for" and enter some number of minutes.

3.
To show an email address of your choice, the last remailer must support
this option and you must add another header.  dingo and frell both
support this option (lower case is important).

Fcc: outbox
Host: smtp.myisp.com
From: myaddress <myaddress@myisp.com>
From: HotStuff <HotStuff@hussy.com>
Chain: *,*,dingo
Newsgroups: alt.binaries.pictures.whatever
To: mail2news@dizum.com
Subject: This is the subject

Note that I added dingo after the last comma (no space) and
a SECOND From header with the address I wish to show (Hotstuff).
Only 5 remailers allow From headers:  dingo, hastio, frell, italy
and panta.  hastio will post to binary groups.

4.  To increase the odds of a post arriving at it's destination, send
more than one copy, and use two Mail2News gateways:

Fcc: outbox
Host: smtp.myisp.com
From: myaddress <myaddress@myisp.com>
From: HotStuff <HotStuff@hussy.com>
Chain: *,*,dingo; copies=3
Newsgroups: alt.binaries.pictures.whatever
To: mail2news@dizum.com,mail2news@freedom.gmsociety.org
Subject: This is the subject

[Note the syntax of the Chain line:  semicolon after last remailer, space
and then the "copies=3" with no spaces between copies or = or 3.]

5.
For setting up a nym, there is a "wizard."  Following the wizard and
altering ALL of the necessary data (and there's a lot to change)
will generate a config message which you then send (and I recommend
sending several copies).  You WILL need a key for your nym before
you start [Use PGPKeys, New key, and make sure that the part of
the address after the "@" is the nym server's address - e.g.
MyNym@nym.alias.net for making a nym at nym.alias.net.
I recommend setting up a return address for a newsgroup, but you
may prefer to use chained remailers and send it to your house.

Of course, there's a lot more, but the help files with QS are extensive,
detailed, and very readable - even for those who hate to RTFM.
